Apple loses the litigation against the company, Virnetx, and is sentenced to pay the equivalent of sek 2.6 billion for the use of patented technology.
Fight between the #Apple and the patent company #Virnetx has been going on since 2010, when Virnetx sued the electronics giant in order to use a total of four patents in the so-called virtual private network in their operating systems. 2012 the judge a jury, Apple to pay just over three billion in damages, but this was appealed to a federal court, partially dismissed the judgment 2014. A new ruling came in February in the whole of the 625 million dollars or 5.3 billion – the largest damages ever in a u.s. patentfall.
Also this was dismissed, however, partly because of the previous jury was considered to be too influenced by the verdict in the previous trials. But Virnetx has continued on its line, and after the last time around, in several instances, including the sentenced Apple to pay 302,4 million dollars to patenthållaren – almost the equivalent of sek 2.6 billion. A new process will now take a position on whether Apple knowingly committed patentintrånget, which then can lead to even higher fines, reports Reuters.
Virnetx is considered by several stakeholders to be a patenttroll, then they manage a large number of patents that they themselves did not invent. In total, the company has over 100 patents, most existing network protocols. In addition to Apple Virnetx also legal proceedings started against, among others, Cisco and Microsoft. The company has also recently filed another lawsuit against Apple regarding the newer versions of Apple’s security features and the Messaging app.
