Instead of writing clear his doctoral dissertation (“a very long essay”) in the late 80th century, Thomas Knoll to work on what would become the Photoshop along with his brother John Knoll. Someone dissertation was never completed and Thomas Knoll is still involved in the work program that is so well known that the name is now a verb.
– I still react every time I hear someone use the application name as a verb. It’s awesome to have a verb, says Thomas Knoll.
On February 19, 1990 released the first version of Photoshop and Adobe celebrates 25-year-old by looking back . During a press conference at the headquarters in San Jose said Thomas Knoll during an hour of questions. The first thing he had to answer is what he does today.
From being written every line of code that make up Photoshop Knoll says that he is now free to work with what he thinks is interesting. Since 2002 he is working with Camera Raw plug-in included in Photoshop and also used to induce module in Lightroom.
Favorite Function
Thomas Knoll was asked by one of the participants which one is his favorite feature in Photoshop. Without any further reflection, he selects stocks that were added in Photoshop 3.0 in 1994. He calls himself an amateur photographer and says he also likes Camera Raw.
– Otherwise, I like the Camera Raw as I have done. Nowadays, I can do almost everything with my pictures in the plugin or Lightroom.
He got his first camera when he was 11 years old and collects their photos on tknoll.com for those who are interested.
Users have influence
From the start, users have had a major influence on the development of the program, according to Knoll. His brother came up with many ideas in the beginning, but then he’s very technical, they were not always useful for ordinary users. Thomas had to give some thought to how they could be implemented in the interface in a good way.
The brothers also left out early betas to the selected individuals that came with your feedback. Ideas and thoughts from users that continue to play a major role in both Photoshop and Lightroom.
Photoshop in the film industry
John Knoll was working at Industrial Light & Magic, a division at Lucasfilm who specializes in special effects and had to use Photoshop early.
– One of the first films I know where Photoshop was used, The Abyss. In one of the scenes is a water tentacle with just water and is hard to do when there is both reflective and goes to see through. My brother ran around on the set and took photographs of the scene in all directions and sat with Photoshop and edited the pictures together and took away people. The images were needed to get the water to look like it belonged in the scene.
About retouching
Nowadays, Photoshop usual for retouching images and in the fashion industry, it often involves changing how the models look. Thomas Knoll think that the topic is controversial and says that Photoshop is a tool and all tools can be abused.
He mentioned specifically that he did not like the effect, photo retouching models on women’s self-image and when it is used to manipulate images in the news industry.
– But the same tools can also be used to make amazing creative things. Photoshop is a tool and it can be abused.
About how Photoshop became the world leader
Thomas Knoll points to three things that have been a contributing factor to Photoshop has become so big and popular. 1993, when the World Wide Web was needed web developers pictures, välkomprimerade JPG and GIF images and Photoshop were the obvious choice for the features were already there.
Originally targeted Photoshop for photographers as it was just too expensive for them to get photos from your computer, without Photoshop was used mostly by graphic artist. The next big thing that had great importance for the growth inkjet printers that made it possible for the photographers themselves to print their photos – it was thus easier to get the edited images from your computer.
Finally, digital cameras, which paved the way for Photoshop image editing software number one.
About Creative Cloud and subscriptions
When Adobe released the latest versions of including Photoshop introduced they also have a new pricing model where customers subscribing instead of paying once for a license.
– From the beginning I was worried, especially for the price model for photographers. For those who mostly use Lightroom, it was too expensive and I spoke to there needed to be changed. Now with the lower price, it’s a fantastic package with multiple benefits.
Thomas Knoll think that the change to selling subscriptions means that Adobe can focus on keeping customers happy instead to try to get together a bunch of visually cool features that can sell upgrades to customers at some point every year or every other year. Now, the company can send out updates when they are ready rather than the benefit of users.
