salicylic acid can replace antibiotic treatment of inflammation of lameness in dairy cows? More and more reports indicate that, and SVA therefore calls for a study evaluating this alternative medication.

The multi-annual study, led by Associate. State veterinarian Ylva Persson, SVA, and is a joint venture between SVA, SLU and Grow Sweden. Foundation for Agricultural Research is funding the study.
– The standard treatment of lameness usually consists of penicillin given intramuscularly through the neck muscle. It means that the full cone treated, which leads to a large amount of antibiotics used, and thus increases the risk of developing resistant bacteria. Additionally, injections affect animal welfare negatively, says Ylva Persson.
– Further, any antibiotic treatment to a withdrawal period of the milk which has great economic importance for many cows in the same herd affected – which is not uncommon.
The disease often causes pain
In Sweden, seen the disease in dairy cows on both the stables and free-range grazing, the calves and young cattle as well as beef cattle. Lameness often causes pain and lameness in the affected animal. Underlying cause is primarily the bacterium Fusobacterium necrophorum, but a number of other bacteria usually occur at the same time.
– There will be more common for lameness inflammations treated with good results with salicylic acid directly into the mouth slit. Something we often get reports from the field. Denmark has compared salicylsyrebandage with tetracyklinsprej, broad-spectrum antibiotics for the treatment of another infectious mouth disease, digital dermatitis, and which received an equivalent treatment results, and even better in some cases for salicylic acid. The treatment effect of salicylic acid in lameness however, is not scientifically evaluated nor documented, and therefore our study important, says Ylva Persson.
Does not affect the development of resistance
Salicylic acid is a product without antibiotics thus have no impact on the development of resistance. Salicylic acid has anti-inflammatory, analgesic and keratolytic (break down old skin) properties, and probably also bacteriostatic properties through its pH-lowering effect. Salicylic acid is a prescription and have the current situation, no waiting period. As animal owner himself can treat with salicylic acid treatment may be initiated at an early stage which is probably good for the treatment outcome.
– If local treatment with salicylic acid shown to be as effective as intramuscular treatment with antibiotics would be a more economical and animal-friendly alternative, and with less impact on resistance development and the environment.
