Today is the end for Windows 2003 – IDG.se

Windows Log

Server Operativet Windows Server 2003 has been around a long time, but has now reached the end. Today Cease support which means no more security fixes or other updates will be made available to the public.

There is a possible solution for companies who have not yet had time to upgrade its servers from Windows Server 2003, but still want the security fixes. It is to sign an agreement of the Premier Support with Microsoft and thereby receive updates.

– Premier Support contracts is not for those who have small budgets, says Al Gillen, director of system software at analyst firm IDC, the IDG News.

An example which sums it may be about is that the US Navy recently signed a contract worth $ 9.1 million, about 77 million, to get continued access to security fixes for Windows Server 2003 and to Windows XP, Office 2003 and Exchange 2003. The agreement can be achieved to apply until 2017 and will then be worth the full 30 8 million, approximately SEK 261 million.

But then is is a total of approximately 100,000 computers.

Data on a cost of 600 dollars, about 5000 SEK per server circulates. It is unclear how the extent of such an agreement might have. Clearly there will be an expensive solution to continue using Windows Server 2003 with special agreement for support.

It is unclear how many running the old version of operativet server. Microsoft said that 24 million instances were started in July 2014. The company has not provided any information on how it looks after it, more than that “a large proportion” of the customers contacted have upgraded. It says Mike Schutz, Microsoft’s marketing manager for cloud platforms.

A possible consolation for those who have not had time to upgrade their servers is perhaps that in any case do not learn hit home, as consumers.
