The EU wants to enable citizens of the Union to make use of services like Netflix and Spotify in all countries.
Now this is not possible because of the complicated copyright rules. Commissioner Andrus Ansip, who is responsible for the EU’s digital single market say that – hopefully starting in 2017 – will be able to bring their legally purchased movies, books, football games and TV series – when traveling around Europe.
The Commission proposal does not include radio broadcasting company content, ie such material available on the Yle Areena or the BBC’s Iplayer.
The proposal must now be approved by the EU Parliament and the member states.
The European Commission hopes that the proposal is approved next year and that the services can be used in all EU countries free in 2017.
