Stålsponten in water that the bridge rests is dimensioned to handle the known conditions in Sundsvallsfjärdens brackish water. The unusual bacteria that have now been detected enables the tongue rust faster than expected.
– We’re talking about an influence of rust that may arise in the long term. To prevent bacteria creates corrosion damage to the tongue we will do additional work, says Magnus Lundberg, project manager at the Swedish Transport Administration E4 Sundsvall, in a press release.
This is an iron-oxidizing bacterium in the family Gallionellaceae. DNA analysis is underway to determine which of the bacteria in the group is involved.
By sampling and analysis follows the Swedish Transport Administration bacteria’s impact on the bridge.
– To avoid major operating and maintenance costs in the future we will complete the installation with additional protection. Our ambition is to have a technical solution completed in autumn 2015 and to carry out the work in spring 2016, says Magnus Lundberg.
What type of action which will be carried Trafikverket can not yet say.
– We will continue to take samples in the spring. Since there are various methods that we should look at and test small-scale on a tongue first before we decide which method it gets, says Magnus Lundberg.
Sundsvall bridge was inaugurated as late as December 18 last year.
