More characters – or mixed numbers and letters?

– We should begin to think about how to solve the problem for the future, says Transport Agency for New Technology.

Today’s system for license plates with three letters and three numbers were introduced in 1973, but already starting combinations out. In autumn releases Transport Agency Y and Z signs, then there must be something new.

– A solution could be to increase by one character to seven characters, either four letters and three numbers or three letters and Lighthouse numbers. We already have seven characters in the personalized plates that can be ordered, says Mikael Andersson, press officer for regulatory affairs at the Swedish Transport Agency, to new technology and says that it would also be possible to mix numbers with letters.

Twelve million combinations

In order to have a solution ready when today combinations runs out’ll Transport Agency launch a commission to look at future systems.

The current system gives more than twelve million possible combinations, and in the month of February, there were 9,477,502 registered vehicles in Sweden, both in traffic shut down. Registration on cars scrapped or deregistered quarantined and 91 combinations are prohibited as they may be perceived inappropriate.
