ABB’s CEO Spiesshofer speaks of “a new era of robotic employees are here.” Yumi, who ABB’s first two-armed robot units, can perform assembly work side by side with people.
The idea is that Yumi primarily be take care of the assembly of small components in the electronics industry.
The robot detects whether the colliding with another person nearby and stops when the a millisecond. Yumi is also built in a way to mimic the human body. Around a skeleton in magnesium robot has been padded with a soft material that can absorb shock. This in turn covered with an outer sheath of plastic.
Yumi is also in approximately the size of a man and should have a human way to move.
The robot weighs 38 kg and has among other cameras in the “hands” for example, to be able to pick up components and orient them in the right direction.

ABB is not the only company that beats the drum for cooperating robots in Hanover. There are also Danish Universal Robotics, recently launched its third lightweight robot.
On site there is also, for example, even robot manufacturer Kuka with its slot assembly robot Iiwa which is also designed to work with people.
