Interview: The designer of the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge – Mobile

He has previously designed the sports cars for McLaren, but since 2012 working Hong Ku Yeo Samsung and is the company responsible for the design of the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge.

– There is a much greater challenge to designing a smartphone today, than it is to design a sports car, among other things, the competition is so fierce.

Hong Ku Yeo course, is not alone in having worked and contributed to what became the final design of the S6 and S6 Edge. Samsung is responsible different teams with the hardware and software. Hong Ku Yeo works primarily with hardware as an industrial designer, but says that the dialogue between departments has become increasingly important.

– We communicate more now than we’ve ever done before, he says.

It is clear that the right design is important in this product than perhaps in any other Samsung product. The design is listed as reasons for Samsung, for example, opted out of the memory card slot, water resistance, and the ability to replace the battery yourself. This was all functions and features as its predecessor, the Galaxy S5 had, but now simply had to prioritize.

Hong Ku Yeo is difficult to say in general about the design goes before the function but wants instead argue that they must go hand in hand. With that said, it seems that the curved screen of S6 Edge to be an example where design idea was the origin and functionality was conceived only later.

– With the Galaxy S6 Edge wanted first of all we get this new screen experience, says he suggests that the contact is used for precisely a later fabrications.

Is the curved screen also design detail of the new phones you are most satisfied with?
– We succeeded so well with the curved screen is so clear a feat, but I also like the surface of the phones. The glass and the gap to the surface during makes the color of the phones get more depth. In this way, we avoid the phone feels industrial and cold. We have also managed to make thin phones still are comfortable to hold.

The work to develop what became the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge went under the code name Project Zero and the idea was that all internally at the company would take a step back and develop the best phone without necessarily look so much on what has been done before.

In the automotive world that you have the experience can be clearly seen even in a brand new car that it is, for example, a Volvo to the breathing their design. How did you do with your Samsung feeling of Project Zero?
– The essential characteristic of Samsung is a premium feel that, among other things going again in the concept of “meaningfull innovation” is one of the fundamental values we worked with.

Hong Ku Yeo showing some of his first sketches of the S6 and S6 Edge and they look very much like the finished products. He says that virtually anyone can draw a phone, but it takes something more to create a product that really goes into production in the edition this is all about.

We have seen your sketches here. When you begin to sketch out a new product, what you start with, then?
– You often have an idea in your head with the assumption. It may then face reality.

Where do you find inspiration?
– Actually, everywhere, always, in the surroundings where I am. We go on many inspirational trips to get new impressions.

The Samsung has several design centers scattered around the world, including three in Europe, but so far nothing in the Nordic countries. On the design office in London determines the over trademark and strategies for the next three years, while teams in Paris studying local cultures and employees in Milan focuses on color and material. The office in Milan has, however, just one year ahead in their work because they are the trends change so quickly.

Can you ever be inspired by any competitor done?
– It would be wrong of me to review competitors’ products. We define our own design strategy and then we stay consistent with it.

Hong Ku Yeo has however no problem with review Samsung’s own products and claims that Project Zero and the new S6 and S6 Edge has been something of a dream project to work on. Much of the work was to simplify and prioritize an aesthetically pleasing design because right design is becoming increasingly important for mobile customers. It does not appear that there was any contradiction between engineers and designers in this little special development efforts.

– No, we are many industrious mobile users in the design team so it was rather that we were persuaded, claiming Hong Ku Yeo.

The Samsung has a relatively long criticized for the models was plastic and then also the flagship handsets. The reason it has taken so long for Samsung to take the criticism and change the material choices depends according to the Hong Ku Yeo they wanted to be absolutely sure that everything functioning satisfactorily to put the new phones in glass and metal in full-scale production.

One of the reasons for the phones’ design language is the importance of standing out in the crowd of new phones released. Samsung makes a lot of market research to gain an input for their product and in Europe, the design has long been a particularly important factor when choosing a phone. Now, the interest spread noticeably even to the rest of the world.

The Nordic countries today offers a unique challenge because it is such a mature smartphone market. According to Samsung, the proportion with a smartphone here twice that when you look globally. It is believed that placing new demands and handset manufacturers have therefore to talk less about the technical specifications and more about what you actually have to use the product in question.

In design circles is often mentioned Nordic design and Hong Ku Yeo speaks indeed of how he can be inspired by the Nordic countries, but he thinks that Nordic design has more to do with usability and one gets the impression that he is inspired as much by other regions and design approaches.

– As a designer I find it sad that the first thing people do when they buy a new phone they close in and hides it in a large protective case, says Hong Ku Yeo. It is obvious that he is particularly pleased with the colors and he says that the green version of the S6 Edge has become all the design employee favorite, perhaps because he thinks that the color is not traditionally associated with that particular mobile phones.

When it comes to shock is the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge made so that the frame in metal should always be the first to receive the force of a blow. Each glass edge is rounded to not only protect the glass, but also for aesthetic reasons and for ease of use.
