Relatives of sex offenders are at greater risk to themselves become criminals.
And rather than shared environmental factors that seem relationship be genetically, according to new research from Karolinska Institutet.
– This does not mean that the sons or brothers of sex offenders automatically become perpetrators too. But even if the sex crimes judges overall, relatively few our study shows that family risk increases are significant, says the study’s lead author, Långström.
A recent study performed at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm show that relatives of persons convicted of sexual abuse themselves committing similar crimes greater than the average person.
The basis for this study is great – all the men convicted of sex crimes in the country for 37 years. In total, the on over 21,000 men convicted of, among other things, the rape of adult and child abuse. The study is published in the International Journal of Epidemiology and based on anonymous registry data.
– This does not mean that the sons or brothers of sex offenders automatically become perpetrators too. But even if the sex crimes judges overall, relatively few our study shows that family risk increases are substantial. Preventive treatment interventions for families at risk could reduce the number of future victims, says Långström, professor at the Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Karolinska Institute and the study’s lead author.
Approximately 2.5 percent of the brothers or sons of men convicted of sex crimes are sentenced for sex crimes themselves. A comparable figure for men in the general population is around 0.5 percent.
– Having a father or brother who had been sentenced for sex crimes gave four to five times higher risk for men to themselves convicted of similar offenses, compared with men who did not have a sexually aggressive father or brother, saying, Långström.
From the research findings, the authors estimate that genetic factors play a role in 40 percent of sexbrottsligheten while environmental factors that family members do not share with each other estimated record in 58 percent of cases.
