When Konami’s CEO Hideki Hayakawa after a period of turmoil surrounding Hideo Kojima and Silent Hill proclaimed that mobile formats nowadays is their main formats, it felt like the nail in the coffin. Quite so bleak, it is not as original translation of Hayakawa-interview left a lot to be desired. This was what he really said:
– I strongly feel that the mobile platform from now on will be the heart of all gaming platforms and that we need a business strategy to create games in line with the observations of plays trends. [...] I hear the phrase “mobile first” but our company does not “mobile first” we only focus on mobiles. Rather, it is to combine mobile, the platform that is closest to our consumers, with consoles, arcade games and card games.
And Konami continues insistently assert that they have not abandoned traditional platforms. Konami PR Director Jay Boor explains to Ars Technica that the initial translation did not give the whole truth.
– Konami will continue to take on the challenge of creating entertaining content via different platforms; mobile, but also for home consoles, arcade and card games.
Boor also regrets the “massive anxiety” the recent Konami event has given us, which includes tours around Kojima and the closure of Silent Hill. But he swears that Konami will continue to work with Metal Gear- and the Silent Hill series.
– We have nurtured them with tenderness for many years and we will continue to produce games for both series. But we are not yet ready to reveal what the future will look like for them.
