My Handrails and guardrails have long been a terror to motoircyklister.

The risk is great to get caught in the handrail at a fall.

But now there is a solution – a secure railing.

It is the insurance company Folksam, which used the National Road and transportinstituts crash course in Linköping to test a new type of crash barriers.

– Folksam tests with the right motorcycle and the motorcyclist is the first ever made in Sweden, this also opens up for a continuation, says Jan Wenäll, research engineer at VTI’s crash track, in a press release.

A total of four full-scale crash tests with different security mounted on road barrier implemented. The tests led to a final test where the railing above page was protected with plastic – everything to get as few projecting things as possible that could cause the motorcyclist to get caught in the handrail.

– Although this still only concerns a simple prototype, so I think this is the first time we really have a working idea on how to effectively reduce the damage to a motorcycle rider colliding with a crash barrier.

– I have seen that many motorcyclists killed beat badly on the railing above page and to the arms and legs would be placed on the rear of the rack and tangled up in the poles, says Jan Wenäll.

Today, crash tested every motorcyclist but which are not included motorcycles altogether. The tests are now done can be a first step to also evaluate the railings by how they manage to protect bikers. Results can also be used for other types of poles and railings in traffic that are dangerous to bikers, cyclists and moped riders.
