Less sharp crash barriers could save motorcyclists lives – forskning.se

Less sharp crash barriers could save the lives of motorcyclists. It shows four crash tests by the insurance company Folksam commissioned on VTI’s crash course in Linköping.

– Folksam tests with just a motorcycle and motorcyclist are the first ever made in Sweden, this opens Also watch out for a continuation, says Jan Wenäll, research engineer at VTI’s crash course.

VTI has participated in two different projects with focus on improved motorcycle safety. In the first project, VTI, along with the SMCs (Sweden motorcyclists) and SVBRF (Swedish road and bridge railing Association), conducted a literature review with the aim of identifying vägräckens function in a motorcycle accident.

The second project, initiated and led by Folksam, has four full-scale crash tests with different security mounted on road safety barriers implemented. The results of the two projects led to a final test where even the railing above page was protected with a simple prototype of plastic, which proved to be excellent.

– Although this still only concerns a simple prototype, so I think this is the first time we really have a working idea on how to effectively reduce the damage to a motorcycle rider colliding with a crash barrier. The reason for the positive result is simply that there are less sharp and protruding parts getting caught or hurt themselves on.

The biker does not stick without sliding with. It is still dangerous, but not as dangerous as sticking. It is about “hide away” sharp metal edges pole tops and top of the balustrade forms. It can be solved in many other ways, the plastic tube was a way to show how an existing railing can be changed by simple means.

– I have seen that many motorcyclists killed beat badly on the railing above page and to the arms and legs would be placed on the rear of the rack and tangled up in the poles, says Jan Wenäll.

VTI’s crash track usually performs approval tests of safety barriers, according to a European standard, which tests with motorcycles is not yet fully included. The experience of motorcycle tests at the VTI will be able to be used in the further international standardization work.
