Stem cells can have a repair capability and reduce the risk of heart attack, new research shows.
– This can provide a greater ability to prevent heart attack, says researcher Jan Nilsson.
A clinical study at Lund University shows that stem cells probably has the ability to repair damaged blood vessels and thus reduce the risk of heart attack and other cardiovascular diseases. Previous studies have focused on cells and animals.
Repair damage
– has previously been known that there are stem cells in the vessels, but it has not gone to show that there is an opportunity for the stem cells to repair the damage incurred, says Maria Wigren, researchers at the Department of Clinical Sciences, Lund University.
The human body is an important protein that controls the growth of stem cells. Lunda study shows that people with the lowest level of protein had a doubled risk of heart attack. Now it is hoped that today’s treatment of risk factors for the disease in the future can be supplemented with a preventive treatment.
– to stimulate repair processes is a completely different approach and can reasonably imagine that these two types of treatments might work well together, says Jan Nilsson, professor and consultant.
Provides allergy
One obstacle to the development of such a drug, however, is that stimulation also affects cells causing allergy.
– But the cells are in different places in the body. If you study on this, I do think that we could find a way to attack only those cells that are really interesting, says Maria Wigren.
The protein may also be a future key marker for heart disease.
– Then you could catch these people before they become ill, says Maria Wigren.
