Is Land Book really twice as fast as the Macbook Pro? We go to the bottom … – MacWorld

Microsoft had apparently Apple MacBook and MacBook Pro in his sights when the company designed the new Land Book. But it was marketing talk or is Microsoft really managed to squeeze in “twice the performance” as the equivalent Mac?

It depends very much on what components are actually sitting in it. There is not much information to go on in terms of the individual components, but we know what Microsoft said in his presentation.

‘By adding an independent GPU, two additional processors, the Land Book, in principle, twice as fast as the MacBook Pro, “said Microsoft chief Panos Panay when it appeared up on Tuesday.

What Panay meant with the “two extra CPUs” is unclear, but we expect that it means a quad-core processor.

Although Microsoft talks about “two additional processors” have the Surface Book probably a dual core processor.

Microsoft shop has no details about the chip that sits in the Land Book. During specifications, we only know that it is an Intel Skylake Core i5 or i7.

The cheapest variant Intel 520 graphics chips, and thus we can conclude us that the processor is a Core i5-6200u or i5-6300u, because it is the only one that has the graphics.

It also means that it is hardly is the cheapest model that Microsoft claims to be driving over the Macbook in performance.

Skylake is better but …

Skylake is clearly better processors than Broadwell, but based on our tests of the processors for desktop machines we make us very reluctant to versions for laptops will have twice the performance as the corresponding Broadwell circuits. Skylake has many other benefits, but not even Altogether, the new series twice the performance.

Then we have Core i7 model of the Land Book. Which processor is it? We do not know, but probably based Microsoft from this in his talk about “twice the performance”, and it is theoretically possible that it is a quad-core processor.

It would not be the first time. Sony Vaios Surface Pro clone has a quad-core Haswell processor, but it has problems with battery life, heat and fan noise.

About Microsoft selected a quad-core processor there are a bunch to choose from. Several of these is 45 watts, which is three times as much as the dual-core processors. Even i7-6820eq located at 28 watts are significantly more power hungry than the usual power-efficient processors.

Some benefits Skylake may give Microsoft an upper hand. The new processors will for example be significantly cooler than Haswell, and they can of course be clocked down to reduce power consumption and heat generation. But even so it is still quite likely that even the more expensive model of the Land Book has dual core processor.

So, if the also has dual core processor, it can really twice as fast as the MacBook Pro? Yes and no. It depends on what you are testing, and the test program you use. Let us explain …
