Birth control pills can impair mood – Västerbotten Courier

Domestic The pill can cause some women mood swings and increased anxiety, shows a Swedish study. But scientists would still not recommend that women stop taking the pills.

Researchers have estimated that a small percentage of pill users feel physically ill, but so far there has been scant research on the area. Now researchers from several universities in Sweden conducted a study involving 202 women, 24 years old. Their mood was investigated when all was hormone free and then after they started eating pills.

The result of the not-yet published study is that 24 percent of women who ate the pill was feeling worse, compared with 17 percent of women who ate the placebo, reports Swedish Television News.

– the study shows that women who received the pill feel worse regarding three main symptoms: they have mood swings, become more irritable and have more anxiety, says one of the main authors of the study, Inger Sundström Poromaa, professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Uppsala.

She would still not recommend women to stop taking the pill.

– Women should absolutely not flush down her birth control pills in the toilet because they take some of these results. We also see that there is a large percentage who feel the same, or better of their pill, she says to SVT.
