Arla wants to increase its use of GMOs – Agriculture News

Several of Arla’s cheeses sold in stores today is produced by means of a GMO produced rennet, called for ystenzym. In order to make their production more cost-effective, would Arla now extend the use of GMO rennet.

– This production is important for us to get a cost-efficient cheese production, says Magnus Larsson, Arla Foods, to Swedish Radio Kronoberg.

Several of the more common cheeses sold in stores contains GMO produced ystenzymet, today. Despite heavy opposition from environmentalists, however, Arla develop this production further. According to the company, this modern GMO technology harmless.

– The enzyme that we gradually go back to using a part of our cheeses are not genetically modified, it is identical with that produced in rennet and is produced by microorganisms. They are those microorganisms that have been developed using genetic engineering, enzyme added in the cheese is not genetically modified, and there are no traces of microorganisms left in the cheese. Arla never allow GMOs in products no matter where they are produced, and we use no genetically modified ingredients in our products, says Magnus Larsson at Arla Foods.

At the same time continued GMO-free food for the Swedish Arla farmers. So here said Arla’s CEO Henri de Sauvage, in conjunction with the Federation of Swedish Farmers took away their industry policy against GMO feed and thus put the ball in the food business, in April last year:

– It is natural that every dairy company itself may decide how they want to do and Arla’s assessment is that we should maintain a position of non-GMO feed for Swedish cows. Sweden is a very important market for the Group and we believe that this at present is good for Arla brand and our business.
