Swedish man has drowned in Spain – Aftonbladet

A Swedish man in the 75-year-old has drowned in fast flowing water at a beach in Spain Torrevieja.

At the beach there are no lifeguards and according to witness statements, it took about 20 minutes before medical personnel arrived at the scene.

the accident occurred at La Mata beach at noon on Wednesday, writes the Spanish newspaper Información.

According to Norwegian Spaniaavisen, the Swedish man to have been unconscious when he was pulled up but then collapsed on the beach.

– the man was here on vacation with his wife, daughter, son in law and grandchildren. The son-in-law said they had been with him when he went swimming as there are strong currents here today. Suddenly, they saw that he had problems and struggled against the currents, said an eyewitness Spaniaavisen.

According to the newspaper, it took about 20 minutes before medical personnel arrived on the scene and performed CPR. But it was already too late – the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

– It is a scandal that a seaside resort of Torrevieja have not yet received lifeguards on site. Son in law told me that the family was here last year, too, but then it was both lifeguards and flags warning of underwater currents, said the witness to Spaniaavisen.

The Swedish Foreign Ministry confirmed that a Swedish man of 75 years old has died in southern Spain.

– He was resident in Götaland and his kin are informed, said the press contact Jessica Garpvall.
