Oracle just want to talk about the cloud – Computer Sweden

Although Oracle founder Larry Ellison presents both new server products and a new processor on Oracle’s giant conference OpenWorld in San Francisco is it just as expected Oracle’s continued path into the cloud that steals the attention. Ellison and Oracle cloud debuted late. Only two years ago the company launched cloud services. Now Oracle is investing to become a full-service provider in the cloud with software as a service, platform as a service and infrastructure as a service. The hope is that customers will move their existing Oracle applications into the cloud and allow the company to take a greater proportion of their budget by selling both the IT manager and operations managers in areas such as finance, HR and marketing.

Oracle has been working long and hard eight years according to Ellison, with the clouds adapt their products and make it possible to move them back and forth between cloud and servers.

– People waiting that we will do what we’ve done the last 30 years, allowing them to move their databases to the next generation architecture without having to change the code, he says.

Larry Ellison exudes confidence around its cloud and think they could afford an occasional swipe against competitors like Salesforce, SAP and Workday during his presentation at OpenWorld.

– We are is the only company on earth that is building its cloud service on a platform which allows you to build the same. We think it makes sense, he says.

In the platform includes features to facilitate the users to make their applications mobile and social, and to adding features for analysis. Although safety is high on the agenda for Oracle, and when a database is moved to the cloud is encrypted. The database is compressed and can also be run in memory to make up the performance.

– Oracle modernized and now we will help you to modernize, says Larry Ellison.

And that’s possibly a statement that Larry Ellison can afford to bear in his new role as chief technology officer. The organization as a whole is still struggling to adjust its sales structure and expectations of their customers to the new time with a special take-client-to-cloud applications.

The program entails , that its sellers are better paid when they sell a cloud service than when they sell a traditional server version of Oracle’s products. But with a sales organization that is used to sell licenses and maintenance contracts for big money, it is not easy to change costume and become cloud vendors and effectively sell one subscription per user. According to Oracle employees on site at OpenWorld is fierce competition from companies like Salesforce, NetSuite, and in some cases even Facebook, which has products that are created directly on the cloud and also have sellers who are used to sell these types of products.

investment customers already made in Oracle licenses also means that many are reluctant to take the step into the cloud without seeing major benefits or savings opportunities.

Oracle has the same problem many old company in transition. The product the company would prefer to sell is not the product that brings in the money that makes the company profitable bottom line. Oracle’s new president Mark Hurd, however, is confident that the company is now well prepared to take the step up into the cloud with its broad portfolio of products.

– Our strategy is to have deals in all three levels of the cloud. For us it means that have software as a service, platform as a service and infrastructure as a service, says Mark Hurd when he hits the press and analysts to answer questions about the company’s strategy.

He thinks Oracle stands out on the platform side with its database and by having the world’s most popular programming language, Java, to its portfolio.

– It will to be extremely attractive to our customers who can build applications in the cloud without having to take any licenses or own servers, said Mark Hurd.

He also claims Oracle is unrivaled when it comes to the number of applications it can offer as a service.

– And all our apps will be the best of its kind, says Mark Hurd.

The question is, is also enough to attract new customers and developers in new industries accustomed to the Amazon or Google’s cloud to develop their services or if Oracle’s cloud is primarily a way for existing customers.
