Gothenburg.

Two lessons extra physical activity a week helps children do better in school.

according to a study of 2000 fifth grade as a researcher at the Sahlgrenska Academy conducted.

“The results are so consistent that we believe we have scientific support for our conclusion,” says researcher and neurologist Thomas Lindén at the Sahlgrenska Academy in a news release.

A group of fifth-graders in the Gothenburg region got together with a local sports club two extra lessons with spawning and locomotor activity in the week. Then compared how fifth grade are passed the national learning targets four years before the change, and five years after. The results were then compared with three control groups in schools not receiving additional physical activity.

according to the study doubled the odds of a more physically active student would meet the stated learning objectives in Swedish, English and mathematics. In the schools where the students are not given extra time for physical movement researchers noted no improvement.

“Rather, we saw where a deterioration,” Thomas Lindén.

The results are consistent with other studies that demonstrated a link between physical activity and improved cognitive abilities. Researchers at the Sahlgrenska hope that the study should be considered when schools’ organization and content planned.
