Volvo’s new monster – with 450 horses – Aftonbladet

Volvo builds the engine that will put in place the automotive world. With triple overcharging rushing effect to the full 450 horsepower.

With twin turbochargers, an air compressor and a unique 250-bar fuel Volvo wants to show the way for the future of engine technology. Since the car manufacturer said it will only build four-cylinder 2.0-liter engines have been skeptics cats and dogs, but now Volvo set the record.

The foundation is Volvo Skövde manufactured VEA engine. Four cylinders and two liters capacity available with power up to 320 horsepower. But much more thought, Volvo and turned to his performance department Polestar Racing and suppliers Denso and AVL. The result is a 450-horsepower super motor with triple overcharging.

Electric compressor

Instead of conventional let exhaust activate turbochargers Volvo has fitted an electric powered compressor that flash quickly at low rpms maximum turbo pressure – and thus ground-breaking 450 horsepower. The fuel is fed via a dual fuel pump by 250 bar pressure.

– There are plenty of examples from other manufacturers where a large turbocharger was used to create high power output from a small engine, but where the driving experience is suffering because the engine’s slow response. With our history as one of the first manufacturers to embrace turbocharging, with a wide selection of turbocharged models since 1981, we felt that we could do something better, says Michael Fleiss, Vice President Powertrain Engineering, Volvo Car Group.

Future sports car

When the engine is in serial production does not reveal the Volvo yet, but this means we can expect a considerable performance version of the upcoming XC90. Not to mention a strong roar any BMW M5 challenger next generation V90 launched in the coming years. Volvo uses the electric motor from today’s hybrid powertrain with a total of 400 horsepower, this means that a future V90 Polestar would have the full 530 horsepower

“A unique engine”

– It has been a very exciting project because it was the first time we used this combination of different technologies into a single application. The result is a completely unique engine with a combination of high power and fast respons.Framför all results, the compact size of the engine in an improved weight distribution between front and rear axles, and a lower center of gravity – two factors that are important for road maintenance, regardless of whether it is a race or a standard car, says Mattias Evensson, head of engine development at Volvo Polestar Racing.

– It may sound a little strange, but this 450 hp engine is a part of that work. If one reduces the bottom of the engine size must also be able to offer customers attractive executable power sources for emission reductions to be implemented on a broad scale. The compact powertrain frees up space and weight in the car’s structure, which can be utilized for electrification and further reduced emissions. And it is that which is our ultimate goal, concludes Peter Mertens.
