Angstrom 200 years – hailed by Google – Swedish Radio

The eminent physicist Anders Angstrom Uppsala would have turned 200 years today. It is noted not only locally but also of the world’s largest search engine, which has him on its home page in some 40 countries on the net today.

Do you know the Angstrom and his importance?

Today is the 200th anniversary of one of Sweden’s foremost physicists and scientists were born. Anders Angstrom, which gave its name to both a rather large building at Uppsala University, and a very small unit of measurement. An angstrom is one hundred millionth of a centimeter.

Anders Angstrom was a professor of physics and also president of the university in the years 1870-71.

Sven Widmalm is historian at Uppsala University and has written on Angstrom and his work.

– His most important achievement in science was that he did spectral analysis, or spectroscopy, as did astrophysics opened as a possible field of research. He helped create the field with some significant efforts in the 1850s.

What is it that we can understand with his help

– Earlier they had no ability to analyze celestial bodies. It was thought even this was not possible in principle to determine a star’s chemical composition. With Angstroms spectral analysis as it became possible, and the field for scientific study of the cosmos expanded something really fantastic, says Sven Widmalm.

Later in the afternoon there will be a wreath-laying, anthem and speeches at Ångström grave.
