Vasa to send heart patients to Umeå – Swedish Radio

Now underway plans to begin a collaboration on cardiac surgery between Norrland’s University Hospital and the Central Hospital of Vaasa.

A collaboration could shorten the Finnish patients itinerary considerably and Hans Frantz (SFP), Chairman of the Hospital District Board of Directors, is excited.

– For our part, Umeå is an attractive option. Discussion about cardiac surgery often involves long distances to Turku or Tampere. In Umeå, only 18 minutes by helicopter, said Frantz.

For less urgent patients is the boat trip in four hours an option. Frantz says it is the same time that it takes to run the car down to Turku for medical treatment.

Frantz and the rest of the Hospital District Board visited Umeå early this year and was impressed by the university hospital’s approach. A collaboration with Umeå is not only a question of heart surgery.

The hospital district can take advantage of services that the hospital in Umeå offers. It has basically everything, says Frantz. It is also possible to get service in both Swedish and Finnish.
