Research: Multiple heightened risk of committing sex crimes for having a sex offender … – Daily Law

Close relatives of the family members who have committed sexual offenses committed more often resembled crimes themselves. A certain part of the explanation is genetic. The research from Karolinska Institutet.

– Although sex crimes judges overall is relatively few, our study of family risk increases is significant. says, Långström, psychiatrist and professor of psychiatric epidemiology.

He is lead author of the study at the Karolinska Institute, based on data from more than 21,500 men who sentenced for sex crimes in Sweden between 1973 and 2009.

Among the men who have a father or brother who committed sexual offenses commit 2.5 percent themselves a similar offense. Among all men in Sweden the figure is half a percent.

Långström tells Radio Sweden that it is not the crime that people inherit. It inherited risk factors that increase the likelihood that you will commit a sexual offense. The risk factors may be difficulty with impulse control, propensity for drug, alcohol or sex addiction.
