Challenging Raspberry Pi with new tiny computer – Joule’s new Intel mins things – IDG.se

Raspberry Pi may be one of the most popular and circumscribed enkortsdatorerna market. But many want a piece of the pie – the market then. Now, Intel has launched a new competitor, Joule. A single board computer packed full of superior graphics and wireless connectivity.

Chippings manufacturer has built in technology that are usually found in normal PCs: a 64-bit quad-core Atom processor, 4K graphics, 802.11ac connectivity and DDR4 memory functions.

the technical contents may be appealing. But in this case the old adage: it tastes, it costs. For the price it will not be anywhere near the Raspberry Pi 3. An advanced version of the Joule released for sale during the Intel Developer Forum taking place this week. Price tag? Over 3 000. Raspberry Pi 3 is about 300 crowns.

The Joule is supposed to provide plenty of computing power to robots, drones, smart devices and werables writes IDG News. Just like the Raspberry Pi has support for both Linux and Windows 10 for IoT.

In order to be useable for drones and robots, Intel has equipped enkortsdatorn with their Real Ensenada camera. Similarly, there is support for VR and AR headset. The camera can detect motion, track objects and measure the distance. With the right settings, it will also be able to recognize human emotions. All this should make robots easier to avoid colliding with obstacles.

The price is not the only challenge. This applies also to win developers’ hearts. Previously, single-board computers from the manufacturer has not been accepted in some broader user groups. The projects are based on Intel’s products have primarily been driven by the company itself. Again, comparing with the Raspberry Pi that has sold millions and built an ecosystem of software around him.

yesterday got Joule show what it was for. A robot bartender, a motorcycle helmet. But the most interesting was a pair of smart glasses which should facilitate quality controllers and analysis in real time. A problem is detected, the glasses vibrate.

Joule comes in two different versions. The slightly larger Joule 570x has an Atom T5700 processor at 1.7 GHz, 4 GB LPDDR4 RAM and a storage space of 16 GB. The second, Joule 550x comes with an Atom CPU T5500 at 1.5 GHz, 3 GB LPDDR4 memory storage of 8GB. Both have standard outputs, GPIO, support for Bluetooth 4.0 and USB 3.0.
