Researchers had to take part in the women Register – Swedish Radio

Stockholm police controversial record of battered women, which echo revealed the other day, has been used in research that are not licensed. Several studies have been done over the years, showing our examination – and the results have been presented both at scientific conferences and in international journals. The registered women have been completely unaware.

The registry, with the intrusive data on women who reported that they abused, has been around for over ten years. For routine have the policemen who worked with database-made paper printouts of what it says about women in Excel files. There stands apart from how the police worked on the case, even offensive comments about the plaintiffs, such as “tricky”, “awkward” and “possibly mentally retarded”. These printouts with notes have since been put in a physical brottsofferakt available for every woman in Sodertorn – and this is where research comes in.

During the period registry has been both students and prominent researchers from Mid Sweden University in Sundsvall sat in Södertörn police station and browsed in the files. The information that the researchers needed for various research ideas have since been used to write scientific papers presented at conferences and published as articles in international journals.

Among other things based research in the contested risk assessments that the police made the situation of women. Our review shows that these studies lack a so-called ethics approval, which they according to the Ethical Review Act needs.

– Yes, there are ethical consent, it says Associate Professor Susanne Beach, one of the researchers.

As regards from 2012. But before that, you had no permission to do research, yet you did it. How is it?

– The question, I would very much like that you set the project manager.

But how are you thinking that you have researched the material relating to people, sensitive data, private circumstances, crimes affected women, as you do not have permission to do research on?

Hello?

– Yes, hello, yes. I’m asking you the question to Henry, who is project manager.

But you have done you guilty of violating ethics review the law here. What do you think about that?

– It is very unfortunate if it were true. It has never been our intention, says Susanne Beach.

Henrik Belfrage is Professor in criminology and one of Sweden’s foremost in threat and risk analysis to violence in close relationships. He is co-author of scientific articles based on, among other things, the material from the women’s registry.

– In my absolute sense, it is the kind of research that carries out there that relate to quality assurance. And there needs to be no ethical approval, says Henrik Belfrage.

But it is still research. You have written scientific articles published in scientific journals.

– YEP, sure it is. We use scientific methods and draws conclusions that are scientific. It is so ethically that we do not even go to the Ethics Review Board.

How does it feel to you for many years has done research on this material, about these women who have been through what they have been with about?

– It feels really good, I’ll tell you. One of the articles you mention here, where it was found that more people got more protection and assistance, and in some cases even survive. So it feels fantastic, I would say, says Henrik Belfrage.
