Spanish media slopes against Google – Computer Sweden

The symbiosis between Google News and traditional media is complex. Earlier this fall Spain adopted a law that would force Google to pay to Spanish articles on Google News.

Google’s response was to the Spanish media terror to shut down its news service in Spain, which means that no materials from the major newspapers longer be available. Google justified its decision by claiming that it is unreasonable not to be able to show the smallest of Spanish publications without paying when Google themselves are not making money on its news service – it is without ads.

The Spanish media trade association wants the government to take action and get Google to open its news service again. Google is simply too dominant and the closure hurts both Spanish citizens and Spain’s business considers the organization.

This is not the first time that Europe’s attempt to get Google to replace the media how their material is shown going wrong. Germany tried earlier this fall to force Google to show significantly smaller parts from articles in the German media. The result? That traffic to the German news sites plummeted.

But despite the failed attempts teaches EU countries continue to find ways to get Google to pay for itself.
