Odin in need of successors – Västerbotten Courier

The Swedish icebreaker Oden, which is also used in polar research, need reinforcement. On Thursday, the government will give the Swedish Polar Research Secretariat commissioned to investigate the state’s need for scientific expeditions, writes SvD. Oden had before the expiration date set at 2030, but now calculated a new ship needed from 2023 to 2025.

– Sweden is at the forefront of research. The position we want to keep. And the need is growing. The climate is one of the most difficult challenges we face, says Research Helene Hellmark Knutsson (S), to the newspaper.

node has a unique research equipment and the interest of the icebreaker is worldwide. In autumn 2014 the ship was out on his last international expedition, SWERUS-C3, where some 80 researchers went to the Arctic.

According to the Maritime Administration, a new icebreaker cost at least a billion, according to estimates from the last year.
