Reply to all upset Tesla friends – Expressen

first The price

Many people are upset because I wrote that Chevrolet’s new electric car Bolt is cheaper than a Model 3. There has been various information about the price which is also complicated by the fact that in the United States under certain conditions can get a discount when you buy an electric car. So the price data that abound both with and without discounts. Nowadays, we know nothing about the equipment levels. Especially Tesla is relatively economical with the facts. I will in any case recognize that the phrase “substantially lower” price is misleading. Wrong of me, even if it is proved that the average price of the Tesla Model 3 as ordered – of more than 250 000 orders – are well over 40,000 dollars. The accepted price tag for a Chevrolet Bolt – we do not know much about – is $ 37,500, without discounts. There are no data on the prices of either Bolt or Tesla Model 3 in Europe and Sweden. My educated guess is that Bolt is still significantly cheaper than the Tesla Model 3 when it launches in the Opel name in Sweden and Europe.

2. Reach

Here, many irritated that I think that the range of 35 mil for the Tesla Model 3 is meekly. There are also those who point out that Tesla would measure the scope of the “real driving” which of course is totally wrong. There is no one who can measure in real driving – all measurements are in some form of predetermined environment and with similar conditions and there are not two drivers in the world to run even two kilometers alike. Even here we stumble too because no one yet has test driven the cars discussed. The figures still are – all from the manufacturers which lowers the credibility – says that cars Bolt and Tesla Model 3 is very close to each other. We also know that Tesla’s – and others’ – reaches really is a good distance from the manufacturer when it rolls on Swedish roads. And until we have a reliable and standardized measurement method that all manufacturers use so maybe we should stop comparing.

third Facts and testing

For some reason Tesla is frugal with the available facts. It sneaks up some facts here and a little there and coming from different forums assumed as true without any control. Tesla has also chosen to go his own way – for example with the range measurements. Perhaps it is for it to be too difficult to compare outright. Tesla also keeps away from the car testing and the only thing that trickles out is praise. I think it’s a shame. It is a pity that it is not possible to test drive a Tesla in the same way that we test other cars. It’s like Tesla wants that we should not compare, and we will absolutely not compare before Tesla had set the agenda and planted an opinion about the car among the crowd of fans.

It is enough to Elon Musk says this is the world’s safest car so it will be a truth. It is true that the Model 3 has not been crash-tested at all and no one, not even Elon, know today how it goes. More than a car model have been delayed and rebuilt after failed crash tests – also from established manufacturers.

I wish that Tesla dared to do that every other manufacturer – even if it is boring – so that we can really compare cars on equal terms.

4th Consumer Reports

Very many points constantly to the Tesla Model S has received the highest possible rating in the different tests. So here it is: there are two ways to test cars. 1) ask customers. Here, Tesla to get soaring rating because customers are already convinced of the greatness of the car before seen or driven it. There are other brands that have a similar phenomenon. 2) Allowing experienced test driver to drive the car and make a judgment based on previous experience. In the latter category, this concerns people like me – running and think. I can drive a car that I think has good driving the same car, but think another driver is discarded. There is no right or wrong. But unfortunately, I often get letters and e-mails saying that “firm in which test they thought that Tesla was the best – you are wrong.” Hm. It is enjoying just as for those reviewing movies or books.

5th Technology and handling

Many, many were upset that I wrote that Tesla made by Volvo when they place the batteries in the floor. It was a sore toe that Tesla would have copied one – which I never claimed I wrote only that they do likewise and not such as Audi who put the batteries in the trunk. I think Tesla’s solution is good but Volvo seems better.

I have also been driving Volvo and Mercedes systems corresponding to Tesla’s autopilot and I think that Tesla is worse than both of these. Note think – because it is a clean opinions.

6th The vision and the car

There is a cult-like behavior around those who espouse everything that Elon Musk does. When I referred to the established financial analysts about the state of Tesla Motors economy – many say that Tesla has a problem – it is counter-argument that “Elon Musk says Tesla makes a profit on every car.” Well, it’s like asking VW’s former CEO Martin Winterkorn of VW cheated by emission from diesel engines and take his negative answer as true.

I know that Elon Musk appears to have a greater vision than making money and for that he hailed. But it’s not the same thing as unqualified swallow everything Elon Musk says and does as the only existing truth.

Similarly, Elon Musk talk about what will happen if one, two or five years and it to be true, but when other manufacturers are talking about their plans so it’s just nonsense that no one knows is true. Assess all the same, please.

seventh Interviews and tests

Many who write also wonder why I did not ask the person X on Tesla, or why I was not driving the car Y itself. Gladly, very gladly. I try and I will keep trying. I want to drive cars, I want to talk to people. But so far, Tesla backed out – for some reason. Maybe they dare not answer questions. Maybe they dare not let myself drive the cars. I have informed Tesla that I go to any place on earth to talk to Elon Musk, or to run the Model X. But it does not seem that they dare to offer their products and people to the same scrutiny as others. Why not invited journalists to the display on Thursday – as others do? Why did not those who were there asking questions – as others do?

8th The automotive industry

If you read all this and you will see perhaps a common thread – that Tesla wants to control over the information and enjoy making on their products. They have done well so far because they created an us against them-feel. But the truth is that Tesla Motors recruited several people from the industry they want to turn their backs to meet its production and profitability goals. The alleged genius Elon Musk created a logistical nightmare when he would build the Tesla Roadster. Now it must begin to be order among innovators – partly because we saw no spectacular design tricks in Model 3 – and I hope that Tesla also dare to face their competitors on equal terms.
