Female coders take up more space – Computer Sweden

Last year, Techeq started – a challenge for technology companies to work with gender equality – 63 companies are with the work so far. And now it even move when it comes to female coders. It can be seen for example in the gaming industry where the female developers became more last year – albeit from low levels. Newly employed women in the gaming industry will increase by 38 percent compared with 27 percent for men shows this year indices Games Industry just presented.

There are also growing up more and more networks and meeting places for female coders. From more specialized networks such as PyLadies Stockholm for women who are interested in developing in Python for all major events and gatherings. For example, the event held Klarna Women Create Tech with a thousand female participants in relation to Stockholm Tech Fest.

Last week went Codess place. Microsoft and Skype are behind the event where female coders met and networking.

– We have of course focused on getting more women into the IT industry a long time but I think that interest has increased markedly. Last time we organized this event was the first year in Sweden and this year took the tickets run out quickly, says Therese Thorstorp which is one of the project leaders.

– There is not so often the girls in the IT industry come together in this way and the atmosphere is very good.

One of the reasons for the increased interest think she is that developers needed in more and more industries.

– I talked with an incubator that works with startups and they concluded that it does not have to be about technology companies today – all companies need technical expertise, all products based on it.

This results in turn that coding is a very useful skill.

– To study economy has long been a way to get many doors to open. But it feels as if technical expertise is the new open-doors skills, she says.

– In addition, it is important to me personally as a woman to other women sees the opportunities available in the IT industry. As long as there is an imbalance of the sexes in the industry, Microsoft will work to get more women. It’s a bit of a given that gender parity provides both new input and a better atmosphere than if it just men or women.

Netlight, one of the company initiated Techeq, is also The Code Pub, a recurring Meet Up for coding women. In September, it is time for a major event.

– There is one-year anniversary of Code Pub, says Boel Sjöstrand, COO of Netlight.

– Code Pub is a meet up for women who want to become better programmers. We created it because there was an event that was more handson – where we actually sit down and program together.

She sees it increasing interest coding a social trend.

– It is played down more and is something everyone needs to know little about. Today program the children and there are even beginning to get into the school. It becomes a language to the side of the French, Spanish or German.

Also, the roads into the encoding more today than before.

– Before, is the mathematical way but now it is combined with the creative and the linguistic. It widens and makes more people are attracted to it.
