New research with patient perspective in focus – Mynewsdesk (press release)

To maintain and improve the patient’s perspective is in today’s time-pressed hospital a challenge. Elisabeth Lindberg, PhD in nursing science at the University of Borås, has in collaboration with a ward for elderly patients, examined the patient’s participation in team meetings.

– Both caregivers and patients need to be brave to challenge established patterns and structures of power, says Elisabeth Lindberg, who now defend at Linnaeus University.

Previous research has described the factors that can challenge starting from the patient. There may be factors that strict hierarchical structure, konkurens for resources and space as well as the patient’s vulnerability. These factors affect, in varying degrees, the patient’s ability to participate in their care.

In order to create knowledge about the patient’s role in strengthening nursing care directed Elisabeth Lindberg in his dissertation interest in the importance of a caring science patient perspective and how this can be maintained and developed in the hospital.

The round has in previous research and in the literature described as traditional weight and hierarchical, with little room for the patient to be heard. Elisabeth Lindberg’s research has largely been implemented in conjunction with a ward for elderly patients. At the department was carried out an attempt to develop the round to a team meeting where the patient was invited to attend.

– I have interviewed patients and nurses who participated in these team meetings with the patient’s presence. The result shows that the team meeting is not only an opportunity for the planning of health care, but also can be an emotional meeting where existential dimensions need to get space. Patients need nurses’ guidance before, during and after the team meeting continues Elisabeth Lindberg.

 - When the patient does not receive guidance enhanced vulnerability. It is also reinforced by the tradition-bound structures in the care and at the team meeting. Konskevensen becomes the patient perspective “lost” in the care and caring then be developed, she says.

The thesis concludes with suggestions for further research such as intervention studies in which older patients are involved and further research on how caring can be developed and valued in terms of its (the) human dimensions.
