ANALYSIS. Two Pixel-mobiles, a smart speaker and the vr–glasses – yesterday, Google unveiled its biggest prylsatsning ever. The evening’s most important news, however, was Google’s new digital assistant.
But the big question is whether or not the new caregiver rather, it will seem more scary than impressive given all of the information it collects about us.
It has been 18 years since Google was born. Since then the company has launched a variety of services and activities, but the core has always consisted of their search technology. Now Google will take the step towards a future in which the classic search box to be replaced with a virtual assistant.
It was particularly clear in Tuesday’s press conference where Google unveiled a bunch of new gadgets – including two new phones, Pixel and Pixel XL.
Google has made consumer products in several years, but have never managed to get the bet to lift – especially not in the super important mobilsegmentet. But what is most interesting about Google’s new smart phones is not how fast the processors they have, or how many pixels that is contained in the high-resolution screens.
what makes The Google Pixel and the Pixel XL unique is that, instead, is that they will be the first phone with Google’s new virtual assistant.
this kind of system is hardly new, for instance, both Microsoft and Apple have similar helpers. Even Google has a variant a few years ago – Google Now – that collect and present information that is relevant to the users in a tailored flow in the mobile – for example, the latest results of your favorite teams, and the departure times for public transport.

But in recent times, Google has spent a lot of effort to sharpen the software behind its digital assistant, among other things, by making it better at perceiving natural speech.
the Result of this work is the new Google Assistant, which, for example, can remember details about the users – and what you have talked about in previous conversations. The system can also now understand the context of your questions by scanning of what is visible on the phone screen. An example: you Ask the assistant to show up the nearest sushi restaurant and then ask the supplementary question What are their opening hours?, so understand assistant which place you’re talking about, and show up relevant information about the restaurant.
The new digital assistant has also been integrated in the new smart speakers Google Home. The principle is the same as with the Pixel-phones: By asking questions to the Home speakers can assistant answer how long travel time you have to work, what you have planned for the day, and other large and small matters such as how many teaspoons are there in a deciliter, for example.
Assistant is impressive on paper. Now it remains to see how quickly Google can learn to understand other languages than English – which is crucial for the service to be able to have a greater effect.
But the biggest question is of course, if users are even interested in this kind of services. Google software may be free to use, but this is a telling example of what it is for currency, we actually pay with – user data.
Are we really prepared to give Google more information about how we live our lives and what we are interested in?
