Apple publishes open letter to the FBI – 99mac

Apple has been ordered by a judge to help the FBI to get into a criminal Iphone , as Apple now answers with an open letter.

as 99mac previously reported, Apple has publicly opposed the authorities’ plans to force mobile phone manufacturers to build so-called “backdoors” into their systems which would allow the police and other authorities to access information from suspects phones.

Now, a judge in California ordered Apple to assist the federal police FBI to access the encrypted information in an iPhone 5C. The phone belonging to one of the men behind the terrorist attack in San Bernardino in December 2015 in which 14 people died and 22 were seriously injured.

The decision was taken after Apple refused to provide access voluntarily, according to the court. The decision is 40 pages and lists a series of steps Apple should do, for example, turn off the feature that erases phone content after the wrong code has been entered too many times. This reports NBC News.

Responds to Open Letter

Apple after the court decision published an open letter on its website, where Tim Cook argues that Apple is already assisting the FBI the investigation in the way they can. The requirement to unlock encrypted information may impact means less security for all Apple users. Among other things, writes Cook:

“Specifically want the FBI that we are making a new version of the operating system for the iPhone that bypasses several important safety features and install it on the iPhone as part of the investigation. in the wrong hands, this software – which does not exist today – be able to unlock any iPhone anywhere in someone’s possession. “

Apple now calls for a public debate on encryption, and believes that such a decision to do less secure encryption undermines the American freedom of citizens.
