Recently, rumors flourished that gravitational waves, predicted in Einstein general relativity, after decades of candidates found by the research laboratory Ligo, Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory, in the United States.

on Thursday afternoon came the news:

– ladies and gentlemen. We have detected gravitational waves. We did it, says Ligo chief David Reitze at a press conference.

waves, which was picked up on September 14 last year, the two black holes collided for 1.3 billion years ago.

Gravitational waves are always sent out when a heavy mass in motion. The waves stretches and compresses the space-time in different directions, but are usually very weak. The waves that are now registered as coming from two bodies, both of which weighed 30 times as much as the sun.

– The collision beamed 50 times more powerful than all the stars in the entire visible universe, says Ulf Danielsson , Professor of theoretical physics at Uppsala University.

New window to the universe
– If there was a really strong one this wave through a man would know how to pulled out and pressed together. But the waves at this distance is so insanely weak that it requires enormous sensitive equipment to perceive them, says Ulf Danielsson.

Gravitational waves are sometimes described as one of the Holy Grails of astronomy, but has until now could not be measured directly. Scientists call the discovery a new window to the universe. It is expected, among other things, to learn more about black holes – but also make completely unexpected discoveries.

– There will be a whole new way to observe the universe. There is something fundamentally new. Nothing like it has been able to do before, says Ulf Danielsson
