Easy to hack the american voting system – New Technology

It is easy to hack american röststationer. But it is not easy to influence the choice on the way.

When there only remained a few days to the us presidential election, managed a security firm took hack a röstmaskin. The machine is a Sequoia AVC Edge Mk1 and look kind of like an atm.

Its technology is mature (the hacked machine was last in operation in 2008), but will nevertheless be used by over 8 million voters this year, including even so-called svingstater as Arizona, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

the Counting of ballots and other information is stored on a regular PC Card/PCMCIA-card. By modifying the information on such a card, you can manipulate the Sequoia machines.

You just insert the card and restart the computer: it effectively does is to update the machine’s firmware. Säkerhetsfirman Cylance has been demonstrated to result in a clip on Youtube, which you can see here below.

It is not the first time american röstmaskiner hacked: a few weeks ago, Cylance-competitor Symantec hack the centre card the american voters use to cast their votes. With the hack, could, among other things, a vote counts as several.

However, it is not very likely that the election would be affected to any great extent. In order to perform the notch, you must have access to the physical machine: they are either connected to the internet or to any other network. They are monitored in addition, and sensitive parts of the machine are sealed to prevent manipulation.

But u.s. security experts addressed yet sharp criticism of the weak systems: a sabotage in a couple of well-chosen states would undermine the electorate’s confidence that AMERICA’s democracy is working as it should.
