New report: Sweden best ”deep tech” ” New Technology

Stockholm is located at the top in Europe when it comes to the number of programmers per capita with knowledge in hot framtidsteknologier as virtual reality and machine learning, according to a new report.

For the third year in a row, Atomico, a global venture capital firm started by Skypegrundaren Niklas and Mattias Ljungman, taken the pulse of the european startup industry.

The study, published today Wednesday shows that Europe is becoming increasingly stronger in the field of "deep tech", which among other things covers the important framtidsteknologier as artificial intelligence, voice recognition, big data and bildseende.

In 2015, was founded in the 470 new european startup company shares whose business revolves around the deep tech-technologies, which can be compared with 347 during the same year – and so far this year, it has spent a total of 88 million dollars on takeovers and mergers in the area, evidenced by the survey.

Sweden and in particular Stockholm, has a huge head start when it comes to expertise in "deeptech". According to Atomico, ranks the Swedish capital, the top five among european cities when it comes to most developers with knowledge of technologies such as self-driven cars, machine learning, and self-driven vehicles per capita.

As an example, on Sweden’s strength in the field can be mentioned that Apple chose Lund as the location for their development department who are experimenting with new techniques for maps. Teknikjätten also bought up the linköpingsbaserade 3d kartbolaget C3 Technologies in 2011.

– What distinguishes Sweden is that there is a large width in the deep tech – everything from Mapillary, which uses artificial intelligence to map the world, to Klarna, working with machine learning in the long term, be able to offer their customers auto loans. In Sweden there are over 50 000 professional developers, which makes this a real industry for the future, ” says Atomicos Mattias Ljungman to the New technology.

There are several underlying factors as to why Sweden and Stockholm have been able to get such a strong position in the deep tech-front. One of these is Sweden’s technical colleges and universities have invested a lot on research in areas such as artificial intelligence, and that we are now beginning to see an increasingly wider commercialisation of innovations produced by researchers.

– In Sweden, it has invested about 1.8 billion kronor in the deep tech in the years 2011-2015. There is less of a capital than in other, larger cities, but in Sweden we have been good at that we don’t always need to get a lot of money to build successful businesses.

another significant reason is that Stockholm has become one of the world’s most attractive cities to live in for developers. World renowned companies such as Klarna, Spotify and Truecaller makes it easier to attract talent from all over the world to the Swedish startup industry.

” Good programmers have a tendency to attract other talented programmers. Sweden has a bunch of international superstars in development. It, such as Jan Erik Solem do with Mapillary attract expertise in artificial intelligence from all over the world, ” says Sophia Bendz, venture capitalist at Atomico, with a background as a marketing manager at Spotify.

Sweden Has the conditions to create more "unicorns", that is to say, companies which reach a valuation of over a billion dollars?

” Absolutely.” But I think that it is important to look at the development over a longer period of time, and feel any panic over the fact that it might not have cropped up a few unicorns in a year, ” says Sophia Bendz.

What areas do you see as the most interesting in the Swedish tech scene?

” Sweden has long been good at creating innovative music labels, but the fintech, retail and fashion are other areas that we also are strong in. Health is another area that is highly interesting, ” says Mattias Ljungman.
