Confidence in internet security, an all-time low – 99mac

People’s trust in the security on the internet has dropped, according to a report from the Internet Society. The main reason is the risk of hacking.

the Internet Society has released a report on of the degree to which people have confidence in the internet, where 24 000 people surveyed in 54 different countries. The conclusion is that the confidence of the internet is a record, and 59 percent say they likely would not do business with a company hit by computer intrusions.

According to the economist Michael Kende who compiled the report, many people feel that companies are not doing enough to protect their customers ‘ data. He says:

– Everyone knows that data security is an important issue for both consumers and businesses, yet do companies not do everything they can to prevent infringement.

The average cost of a data breach is now according to the Internet Society the equivalent of 37 million which is an increase of 29% since 2013. In 2015 reported 1 673 cases of hacking, so it’s about large sums of money. The Internet Society is now calling on organisations to actively work on to improve their safety, according to the five recommendations:

  1. putting users at the centre, which is the largest victims of hacking.

  2. To be more open about the risks and consequences of data breaches. To share information responsibly, can contribute to increase the data security and create better technical solutions.

  3. data security must be a top priority.

  4. organisations must be held responsible when the hacking is done with them.

  5. To increase the motivation to invest in data security by creating a market for reliable and independent way to measure the level of security. In this way, companies can compare themselves with each other, and a high level of security becomes a competitive advantage.

the internet of Things the “extreme risk”

the Report also draws criticism against the phenomenon of the internet of things (IoT, the Internet of Things where more and more vardagsprylar will be internet-connected. According to estimates, tens of billion devices will be connected by 2020, and many of them have sensors that can track the geographical location, save health data and other sensitive information about the user. The security of many of these connected gadgets are low, mean, Olaf Kolkman, chief technology officer at the Internet Society. He says:

– When more and more of the devices we have in the pockets are connected to the internet, the risk of losing personal data is extremely high.

Kolkman also said in the report that as much as 93 percent of the intrusions could have been prevented if the proper safeguards had been in place. The report in its entirety can be read on the Internet Society web site.
