40 barrels of oil found in the Dalälvsbotten – Västerbottens-kuriren (the Courier)

about 40 barrels of waste oil have been found at the bottom of the österdal river at the Lake south of Leksand, reports the DN, and Swedish Radio P4 Dalarna. In the municipality of leksand is convinced that someone has dumped the barrels, which can hold 200 liters each, and have therefore made a police report on environmental crime.

— Many of which are corroded and we do not know how much oil has drained out into the river, says the municipality, an environmental inspector Peter Tengnér to DN, and he thinks that the barrels may have been in the water between 10 and 30 years.

It all was first discovered by divers during a älvstädningskampanj last summer. But not until now, when the municipality recovered all of the barrels, have you realized the extent of the dumping.

— It is not jättetoxiskt, is not acutely toxic. But the oil is definitely not something you want in the water. It can affect the fish and vegetation in the river, ” says municipal samhällsutvecklingschef Åke Sjöberg to P4 Dalarna.
